Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate adults`` contact experiences and different attitudes towards the elderly depending on their contact experiences. The sample of this study was collected from a survey targets; 1,409 university students, adults and elders living in Chungcheongbuk-do. The results are as follows; First, adults`` images of the elderly from indirect contacts through media were mostly negative. The ages and level of educations were two sociodemographic factors that affected forming intimacies and the media images of the elderly. The youth population and people who graduated high schools had less intimacies with the elderly and had negative images of them. Second, Adult``s attitudes toward the elderly showed the most positive opinions on a support policy for the elderly. The second most positive opinion was on an acceptability towards the elderly. However, they showed negative responses on the elderly as they became perceived threats. Compare to the other groups, the elderly and people who did not graduated middle schools were positive about accepting the elderly and negative about perceived threats. Third, sub-factors of the elderly contacts that significantly impacted on the attitudes towards the elderly were intimacy towards the elderly, media contacts about the elderly and media images of the elderly. The study showed that the groups with intimacy, media contacts and positive media images of the elderly had the most positive ideas. Based on the study results, we recommended implications on forming positive attitudes and supports toward the elderly.
